Persian Henna Powder

Henna is a plant that is used for producing cosmetic, medicinal, and industrial permanent dyes from its dried leaves. It contains a coloring substance called Lawson, ranging from approximately 1.0% to 5.0%. This plant has aromatic oval-shaped leaves and clusters of highly fragrant white to reddish flowers.

Henna dye is utilized for coloring the skin, hair, nails, and various fabrics including silk, wool, and leather. Nowadays, Henna art or Henna tattooing is in vogue with new designs and patterns that can last for about two to three weeks. Another term for Henna body art is “Hennangari,” “temporary tattoo,” or simply “Henna design.”

Henna not only possesses coloring properties but also exhibits antibacterial and antifungal effects. Henna paste can be applied to damaged areas of the skin and even on nails to combat fungal infections. The compound Lawson present in Henna is effective in eliminating skin bacteria and fungi.

Ibn Sina (Avicenna) wrote that boiled Henna leaf is used to treat inflammations, burns, mouth ulcers, and gum wounds. It is also beneficial in relieving neuralgic pain and treating bone fractures.

Additionally, Henna is used as an ornamental element and as a therapeutic agent in various cultures and traditions, especially in ceremonies and special events such as weddings and religious celebrations.

Henna is cultivated in many parts of Iran, especially in the southern regions like Baluchistan and Kerman, where it is known for its high quality. Among these, Shahdad Kerman’s Henna stands out as a distinct variety and is famous as “Fiery Henna.”
